Building a successful business goes beyond merely chasing growth, it requires making purposeful decisions that align with a long-term vision. Business strategist Alessia Falanga has spent two decades helping companies scale to seven figures, focusing on intentional growth rather than distraction. Drawing from her extensive experience managing multiple accounting firms, she offers practical insights for entrepreneurs aiming to achieve sustainable success, all while avoiding the burnout that often comes with rapid expansion.
Choosing the Right Path
We’ve all been there, an exciting opportunity comes along, and we jump at it without considering whether it fits into our overall plan. Alessia Falanga refers to this as the “shiny object syndrome,” and she sees it derail many promising businesses. “Business owners can get excited about opportunities, and it creates a distraction,” she explains. So, what’s her solution? “Consider opportunities that are aligned with your long-term goals, rather than constantly shifting your direction. “While this advice may seem straightforward, it requires discipline. “Prioritising clarity and intention over the speed of growth is really important,” Alessia insists. It’s not about growing fast, it’s about growing right.
Making the Tough Calls
Saying no can be difficult, especially when money is on the line. Alessia Falanga recently faced this challenge within her own firm. “We had to say no to a high-paying client whose values no longer aligned with who we are,” she admits. “That’s really hard to do.” So, how does she make these tough decisions? Alessia evaluates both the short-term and long-term impacts. “If you have five team members disgruntled by the same client and you’re not doing anything about it, think about the impact on their motivation and commitment.” She describes it as “short-term pain for longer-term gain.” While turning down revenue can sting in the moment, losing a good team member and having to replace and train ultimately costs more.
Finding Your Pace
One of the trickiest balancing acts for entrepreneurs? Speed versus stability. “It becomes hard to balance the pace of building versus having clarity and stability,” Alessia notes. Her solution combines swift action with regular check-ins. “Execute quickly, but then pause to reflect and adjust where needed,” she suggests. “Growing a business is like building with blocks—you lay one down, then take a moment to make sure it’s solid before adding the next.”
This thoughtful approach helps avoid the common pitfall where companies race ahead without taking time to evaluate what’s working, only to have things “start falling over.” By pausing to reflect and adjust, businesses can maintain momentum while ensuring their foundation remains solid.
Avoiding Burnout
Burnout is an ever-present challenge for business owners. Alessia Falanga’s antidote? Community. “Entrepreneurship can sometimes be lonely, you’re on this fast road and feel like you’re on your own,” she says. “But if you set yourself up with the right mentors and team, when you start to feel burnt out, you have your lifelines.” This support system makes all the difference. “Those periods get longer between burnout because you’re filling your week with people who are supporting you, inspiring you, and people you can lean on.”
Today, Alessia continues to grow her accounting firms while helping other business owners implement these same principles. For her, the hands-on experience of building companies adds immense value to her coaching. “Many people can teach, but when you’ve actually gone through it yourself, that’s different,” she says. “You know what wasn’t in the manual. Having acquired firms myself, renovated them, and plugged them into our business, that practical experience does wonders when sharing learnings with clients.”
By focusing on intention over rapid growth, Alessia has built a business that’s not only successful but sustainable, one that doesn’t leave you counting down the days until the weekend.
